In the year 1997 the Porsche Boxster was introduced and began setting new standards for performance and safety in the open-top sports car market. The Boxster’s mid-engine concept distinguished it from competitors along with the six-cylinder flat engine. In 1999 the Boxster series was extended and the Boxster S was introduced. The Boxster S was powered by a 3.2-liter engine that was later enhanced to achieve up to 260 horsepower in the model year 2003. The entire Boxster series also featured the improved water-cooled engines.
