2024 Porsche Macan vs. Audi Q5
The compact crossover class is a hotly contested market segment, appealing to small families and single professionals who prefer a bit more space in their ride. The Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 have established strong reputations in the luxury compact SUV class over recent years with their potent engines, comfortable cabins, and upscale entertainment features. Choosing between the two is difficult, but we’d like to help our customers here at Porsche Ontario by examining some of the standout features in each crossover to find out what sets the 2024 Porsche Macan apart from the Audi Q5 and other cars.
Exterior Styling
The 2024 Macan looks like the part with a sloping roof to the rear that manages to make this crossover still have a sporty feel. The front fascia matches the body color, and silver-finish tailpipes highlight the rear. The Macan rides on 19-inch wheels as standard, while 20-inch or 21-inch wheels feature in the higher trims.
The Q5 also cuts a stylish figure on the road while offering a few rugged touches. Exterior features include silver roof rails, chrome accents on the front grill, and heated and foldable door mirrors in the Q5’s body color. A rear spoiler, chrome trims on the exhaust, and a chrome strip below the rear lights reveal its exterior appearance.
Interior and Technology
Stepping inside the cabins of these two crossovers is an enjoyable experience. The interior features premium materials and cutting-edge technology, creating a relaxing ambiance. Both vehicles offer adult-friendly seating across two rows with a maximum capacity of five.
The Macan has over 17 cubic feet of storage space at the rear, providing enough space for a load of groceries or daily luggage. The Q5 has around 25 cubic feet of storage at the rear. With the rear row folded flat, the Macan has 53 cubic feet of storage compared to the Q5’s 54 cubic feet.
Even the base trims of these two German-designed competitors make an impression. The Q5 features leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats. The Macan has power-adjustable, heated front seats, leather and cloth upholstery, and tri-zone automatic climate control. Moving up the trim ladder provides access to luxury features, such as a heated steering wheel, front sport seats, and leather and synthetic suede upholstery.
The Macan’s infotainment system is eye-catching since it has a 10.9-inch touch-screen display and a 10-speaker stereo in its base trim. There’s also wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Audi Q5 offers a 10.1-inch screen, a 10-speaker stereo, wired Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. Optional upgrades in the Macan include a 14-speaker or 16-speaker audio system and wireless device charging so everyone can keep their phones fully loaded. The Q5 offers a 19-speaker stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Performance
In terms of performance, there’s no denying that the Porsche Macan boasts more power under the hood than the Audi Q5. Both vehicles offer two engine options, but Audi’s optional upgrade can only match the Macan’s base engine offering. Audi equips the standard Q5 with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of putting out 201 horsepower. The Macan’s base engine is also a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit, but it can generate a stronger 261 horsepower.
While the optional upgrade in the Audi will provide 261 horsepower under the hood, the Macan offers a more exciting twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with 375 horsepower. This 2.9-liter powerhouse goes even further in the range-topping trim, cranking out 434 horsepower for a truly remarkable driving experience. Keeping in mind the strong powertrains in both crossovers, fuel economy is decent in the Macan and Q5. The Porsche makes up to 25 mpg on the highway, while the Q5 is good for 29 mpg.
These two sporty SUVs are fun to drive. Porsche draws on its race car heritage to produce a crossover with exciting handling and great control around corners. With the more powerful engine configurations, it’s possible to feel what it’s like to accelerate with genuine power to a quick highway speed. The Q5 focuses on delivering a slightly more sedate ride, but it can still hold its own in most driving situations.
Safety Ratings and Features
The 2024 Macan gets a reliability rating from J.D. Power of 84 out of 100, putting it in the “great” category. It has a good selection of standard safety features to assist the driver. These include lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. It’s possible to upgrade to features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park assist, and even a surround-view parking camera to help the driver keep on top of obstacles from any angle as they move into position.
The Q5’s reliability rating is slightly below the Macan’s at 75 out of 100, which is still enough for the “good” category. Its standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors. Stepping up to the higher trims allows adding a surround-view parking camera, traffic sign recognition, and a head-up display so the driver can monitor the vehicle’s performance without taking their eyes off the road.
